  • Additonal information:

Throughout Lemnos, one encounters picturesque villages, with fine examples of  traditional architecture. An excellent example being Kondias, with its attractive stone houses of seafarers and the impressive stone windmills.

Gomati Sand Dunes. A phenomenon resembling a real desert: spectacular formations of fine sand, forming a unique and fascinating landscape, interrupted only by scattered brushwood. The Dunes are located in the Gomati area of about 70 acres.

Lemnian Earth was a thick reddish clay, known since the antiquity for its many healing properties. It was collected from the Agiochoma area, near the settlement called Kotsina, by the priests of Hephaestus, a specific day of the year. Then, it was transferred to the city of Hephaestia, where it was formed into tablets, and sealed with a special stamp to ensure authenticity of the medicine before its distribution or sale. The "Lemnian Earth" is considered as the first worldwide standard medicine and occupies a special position from the antiquity to the 19th century not only in Greece but throughout Europe.

The archaeological sites of Lemnos are considered significant and draw the attention and interest of any traveller. The active volcano of the island was the cause to connect the Lemnos with Hephaestus, the god-patron of metallurgy. According to the myth, Hephaestus taught the art of metallurgy to the inhabitants while there was an underground laboratory at the depth of the island, where Hephaestus and his assistants manufactured metal masterpieces.

Hephaesteia was the largest city of Lemnos for 22 centuries! The city that was dedicated to the god-patron of metallurgy, Hephaestus, is built on a peninsula formed by two natural harbours. The archaeological excavations have revealed houses, cemeteries, baths, wells, a great number of objects, a theatre of the Hellenistic period, the temple of the Great Goddess and a huge building probably the palace and the labyrinth of Lemnos.

Kaveiria. Deities of the underground fire and metallurgy, are referred to as children of Hephaestus and Kaveiro. The sanctuary of the Kaveiries held mysterious rites associated with the rebirth of nature and fertility. In the sanctuary, relics have survived from the ancient Telesterion, an underground gallery, a palace and a Telesterion from the Hellenistic period.

Poliochni is considered to be one of the oldest settlements in the Aegean Sea. It is also known by the name Eptapolis as the excavations uncovered seven successive settlements built one upon the foundations of an earlier one.

Chortarolimni-Asprolimni-Aliki wetlands covering a total area of 18,000 acres. The environment of Lake Aliki is conducive to breeding of several species of birds including the Collared Pratincole, the Black Winged Stilt and the Pied Avocet. The Lesser Kestrel also breeds here. The nature of the wetland also makes it an excellent resting place for migratory birds. Aliki is known to have the largest seasonal gathering of flamingos in Greece. Among the animal species are hares, rabbits, bottlenose dolphins, the Greek tortoise or spur-thighed tortoise and its subspecies the Caspian tortoise.
